Rotary Hears -
Leandro Suits Affect Eastern Carolina

Mary Alice Edson Wiggs, a local Part-Time Consultant for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, gave the Windsor Rotary Club an update on the effects and affects of the Leandro lawsuits on schools in Eastern Carolina. The recent letter from Judge Manning about Bertie County High School made this a timely topic.

The Leandro suits have created a situation where the courts have ruled that students have a state constitutional right to a good public school education. However many schools are falling short. In response, the state has created some special funds for the worst performing schools, and Ms. Wiggs helps the systems that qualify for the funds use the money effectively to overcome the shortcomings that have been identified.
