Windsor Rotary Hears Story About "Edenton"

The speaker for the Windsor Rotary Club today was Peter Rascoe, Edenton-Chowan Special Projects Officer. Peter was instrumental in the 10 year effort to bring the "Edenton" Cannon back to Chowan County after it was found at the Shiloh Battlefield exhibit in Tennessee. Peter gave a great presentation telling the story of the history of the cannon, and the history of how it was brought back to our area.

Peter Rascoe Tells The Story Of Bringing The "Edenton" Back To Chowan County

It is an exhiting story, with both a supporter and an opponent in the National Park Service, who made the effort drag out for such a long time. It is also a tribute to the support of Elizabeth Dole, who went to bat to make sure the "Edenton" was returned. Her contribution was acknowledged when Peter thanked the opponent in the National Park Service who was the curator of the battlefield where the "Edenton" was on display for allowing it to return. His retort was, "Don't thank me, thank Elizabeth Dole". I don't think he was too happy to give up the cannon.

The new location of the "Edenton" is shown beside the St. Paul, already on display, as the last picture in this article about the rededication ceremony for the "Edenton":

It was a great presentation. Many thanks to Peter Rascoe for all his efforts.
